BOBBY VAULT · PHASE 0 · DIRECTION 1 REFINEMENT ROUND

Vault Blue is canonical. The beeldmerk is not.

Three closely related refinements of the approved Direction 1 mark, addressing the small-size legibility, internal-detail and monochrome failures identified by the Product Owner. Directions 2 and 3 are closed and no fourth direction has been created. Nothing here is canonical until Alex (alex@siteways.io) approves 1A, 1B or 1C.

The three refinements, side by side

Shown at 96px on Steel Mist and on Deep Chamber. Same construction grid, same stroke logic, three different answers to 'how does a vault door become a B'.

1A — Simplified Vault B

RECOMMENDED

The circular vault-door silhouette is kept, but the door face is now the letter B itself: a heavy stem with two open counters, drawn as vault geometry rather than typed type. Internal detail is cut to four rim bolts at the cardinal points and a single centre-lock dot seated in the lower counter. Nothing else survives from the original mark.

1B — Negative-Space Vault B

The door face is solid and the B is carved out of it, together with a thin inset door edge, two seam ticks at top and bottom and four bolt points. The counters read as the door's viewing ports. Single-colour by construction — there is only ever one ink plus the surface.

1C — Bobby Vault Monogram

Built at 16px first and then scaled up. One heavy ring, one heavy B, one handle bolt on the right edge. No rim bolts, no centre lock, no seams. Everything that could not survive a 16×16 grid was removed before anything else was drawn.

02

Real-size rendering — 16 to 128 px

Every mark below is rendered at its true CSS pixel dimension against an 8px measuring grid. Nothing is scaled up inside a presentation card.

Recognition and collision review

Visual-similarity assessment only. No trademark search has been performed and no trademark clearance is claimed or implied; a registry search by counsel is required before the mark is filed or used commercially.

1A — Simplified Vault B

  • Gear / settings iconLOW

No repeating teeth; bolts sit at four cardinal points only and are rounded, not radial teeth.

  • Coin / cryptocurrencyLOW

Open ring with an interrupted rim, not a filled disc with relief.

  • Camera lensLOW

No concentric inner rings and no iris blades; the interior is a letterform.

  • Bank or insurance logoMODERATE

Circular navy-and-blue marks are common in finance; the bolts and the B carry the differentiation.

  • Generic safe iconLOW

Circular door rather than the ubiquitous rounded-square safe body.

  • Bitcoin symbolLOW

No ascender/descender bars through the stem and no orange disc.

  • Existing Bobby product markLOW

Bobby ID's institutional navy is shared deliberately; the circular bolted door is unique to Vault.

1B — Negative-Space Vault B

  • Gear / settings iconLOW

Solid face, no teeth or radial slots.

  • Coin / cryptocurrencyELEVATED

Filled disc with a knockout capital letter is the dominant token-logo pattern. Main argument against making 1B canonical.

  • Camera lensLOW

    No aperture geometry.

  • Bank or insurance logoMODERATE

Solid blue roundel is a common retail-bank app icon shape.

  • Generic safe iconLOW

Reads as a door face, not a safe body.

  • Bitcoin symbolMODERATE

Mitigated by the absence of vertical bars through the stem and by the cool blue rather than orange, but the silhouette family is the same.

  • Existing Bobby product markLOW

No solid roundel currently in the ecosystem.

1C — Bobby Vault Monogram

  • Gear / settings iconLOW

One protrusion, not a repeating ring.

  • Coin / cryptocurrencyLOW

Open ring, not a filled token.

  • Camera lensLOW

    No concentric structure.

  • Bank or insurance logoMODERATE

Circled-monogram marks are extremely common in banking and insurance identity.

  • Generic safe iconLOW

    Not a safe body.

  • Bitcoin symbolLOW

    Different construction entirely.

  • Existing Bobby product markMODERATE

A circled letter is the most likely shape to collide with a future Bobby sibling mark; reserve the pattern if 1C is chosen.

Wordmark and lockup refinement

Spelling is fixed as “Bobby Vault”. Lockups are shown with the recommended refinement 1A; the same construction applies to 1B and 1C if either is approved instead.

Descriptor evaluation

ENCRYPTED VAULTS is not made canonical. Recommendation: use PRIVATE DIGITAL VAULTS as the interim descriptor on the primary logo, and no descriptor everywhere else.

ENCRYPTED VAULTS
Not yet verifiable

The encryption architecture has not been designed, implemented or reviewed. Using it now would be a decorative promise, not a description. Hold it as a candidate for the moment client-side encryption is implemented and independently verified.

SECURE DIGITAL VAULTS
Defensible but vague

'Secure' is an unfalsifiable marketing adjective. Safe legally, weak informationally.

PRIVATE DIGITAL VAULTS
Accurate today

Describes the access model — private by default, shared only on explicit grant — which the product will genuinely implement from day one. Recommended interim descriptor.

No descriptor
Always accurate

Recommended for the /console lockup, mobile lockup, favicon and app icon regardless of which descriptor is chosen for the primary logo.

Beeldmerk edge separation (no text, so ratios are advisory)

  • 1A on Steel Mist — rim Security Blue against #E8EEF3 at 4.60:1, above the 3:1 non-text minimum. Recognisable at 16px.
  • 1A on Deep Chamber — rim Protected Cyan at 4.81:1, letter Steel Mist at 15.53:1. The letter carries recognition, the rim carries the silhouette.
  • 1B on either surface — the disc/surface edge is the only boundary that matters: 4.60:1 light, 4.81:1 dark. Highest silhouette clarity, lowest internal-detail retention below 24px.
  • 1C — 3.2-unit ring at 16px resolves to a 1.6px stroke, the heaviest of the three, so it holds on low-contrast and glare-affected displays where 1A's 2.4-unit rim starts to thin.
  • All three clear 3:1 non-text contrast in every one of the six treatments. Protected Cyan is never used for text below 18px anywhere.
08

Strengths and weaknesses

1A — Simplified Vault B

STRENGTHS
  • — The B is unmistakable at 24px and up, and still legible at 16px because the counters are open strokes rather than filled shapes.
  • — Four cardinal bolts read as locking pins without producing the tooth ring that made the earlier mark look like a gear.
  • — The centre lock is a single dot, so it stays a lock instead of becoming a dial, aperture or coin relief.
  • — Best-behaved of the three in one-colour print and in knockout: no fills to plug up, no tone-dependent contrast.
WEAKNESSES
  • — At exactly 16px the lower counter narrows; the favicon should ship as a hand-tuned 16px asset rather than a browser downscale.
  • — The most conventional of the three — it is a good mark, not a surprising one.
  • — Four bolts plus a lock dot is still five satellite elements; any further detail would break it.

1B — Negative-Space Vault B

STRENGTHS
  • — Highest presence on a dark console header and as a social avatar: a solid disc holds its shape against noisy backgrounds.
  • — Structurally single-colour, so monochrome and print versions are not adaptations, they are the mark.
  • — The seam ticks and inset ring say 'door' before the eye resolves the letter, which is the intended reading order.
WEAKNESSES
  • — Highest confusion risk of the three: a solid coloured disc carrying a knockout letter is the exact template of a currency token mark.
  • — The 0.9-unit inset ring and 0.95-unit bolts disappear below 24px; at 16px the mark degrades to a disc with a B in it.
  • — Requires the surface colour to be known, so it cannot be placed over photography without a plate.

1C — Bobby Vault Monogram

STRENGTHS
  • — Cleanest 16px and 32px rendering of the three; stroke weights land close to whole pixels at both sizes.
  • — Survives greyscale, low-contrast displays and adverse print without any adaptation.
  • — Institutional and calm; nothing decorative is left to date badly.
WEAKNESSES
  • — 'Vault' is carried almost entirely by the single handle bolt; remove it and this is a circled letter, which is generic.
  • — The asymmetric handle can read as a key or a toggle at very small sizes.
  • — Least distinctive at large sizes — it does not reward being shown at 128px or on a hero surface.
09

Recommendation

RECOMMENDED

1A — Simplified Vault B

1A is the only refinement that fixes the reported failures without introducing a new one. It keeps the circular vault-door silhouette and the restrained centre lock that were approved, removes the mechanical density that produced the gear and lens readings, and states the B in vault geometry rather than dropping a typed letter into a ring. 1B has the strongest presence but carries an elevated coin/token collision risk that is the precise category Bobby Vault must not be mistaken for while it stores crypto recovery information. 1C is the best pure 16px performer, but its vault meaning rests on one bolt, and at large sizes it is a circled letter. 1A holds at 16px, holds at 128px, and holds in one ink.

10

What was and was not implemented

IMPLEMENTED
  • — Three vector refinements of the Direction 1 beeldmerk (1A, 1B, 1C), drawn on one grid.
  • — Real-size rendering at 16, 24, 32, 48, 64 and 128px against an 8px measuring grid.
  • — Mobile header, /console header, application-icon and social-avatar tests.
  • — Six required treatments per refinement, each shown at 64px and 24px.
  • — Recognition and collision review across all seven named risks.
  • — Refined wordmark, primary/horizontal/stacked/beeldmerk-only/compact/mobile/monochrome lockups.
  • — Descriptor comparison and recommendation.
  • — Measured WCAG contrast table including corrections for failing combinations.
  • — This presentation page only. The approved Vault Blue palette drives the page shell.
NOT IMPLEMENTED — GATED
  • — Production application functionality
  • — Authentication and Owner provisioning
  • — Database structures and vault storage
  • — Encryption architecture
  • — AI search
  • — Didit integration
  • — Admin functionality, API and MCP
  • — Recovery workflows
  • — Directions 2 and 3 remain closed; no fourth direction was created
  • — No trademark search or clearance

Phase 0 is not marked complete. No refinement is canonical.

Owner approval requested

Alex — please approve one of 1A, 1B or 1C as the canonical Bobby Vault beeldmerk, and confirm the descriptor decision (recommended: Private digital vaults on the primary logo, none elsewhere). Reply with the refinement code. Work on the production vault stays gated until you do.
